If you own a house, it is smart to take out home insurance. Usually, this is even mandatory when taking out a mortgage. If you take out home insurance, you are insured for damage to your house that you could not do anything about yourself. Think of damage due to fire, lightning or a car that hits the facade. Damage to the items that are attached to your home is also covered by this insurance.
If you live in a purchased apartment, you often do not have to take out home insurance. The Owners' Association (VVE) will then arrange this. If you are renovating your apartment by, for example, installing a new kitchen or installing solar panels on the roof, then the VVE home insurance is probably not sufficient.
